Coffee exports by country totaled US$32.7 billion in 2017, up by an overall 15.9% for all coffee shippers over the five-year period starting in 2013. Year over year, the value of globally exported coffee appreciated by 7.5% from 2016 to 2017.

Europe accounted for the highest dollar value worth of coffee exports during 2017 with shipments amounting to $11.5 billion or 35.1% of worldwide exported coffee. Close behind in second place was Latin America (excluding Mexico) plus the Caribbean at 33.2%. Smaller percentages belonged to exporters in Asia at 18.3%, Africa at 6.9%. North America at 5.9% then Oceania at just 0.6% led by Papua New Guinea and Australia.

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System (HTS) code prefix for coffee is 0901.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of coffee during 2017:

  1. Brazil: US$4.6 billion (14.1% of total coffee exports)
  2. Vietnam: $3.5 billion (10.7%)
  3. Germany: $2.64 billion (8.1%)
  4. Colombia: $2.58 billion (7.9%)
  5. Switzerland: $2.2 billion (6.9%)
  6. Italy: $1.6 billion (5%)
  7. Indonesia: $1.19 billion (3.6%)
  8. Honduras: $1.16 billion (3.6%)
  9. France: $1.07 billion (3.3%)
  10. Belgium: $940.3 million (2.9%)
  11. Ethiopia: $938 million (2.9%)
  12. United States: $873.1 million (2.7%)
  13. Netherlands: $754.1 million (2.3%)
  14. Guatemala: $748.6 million (2.3%)
  15. Peru: $707.2 million (2.2%)

The listed 15 countries shipped over three-quarters (78.2%) of global coffee exports for 2017 by value.

The fastest-growing top coffee exporters from 2013 to 2017 were: Netherlands (up 128.7%), Ethiopia (up 54.7%), France (up 41.4%), Honduras (up 39.2%) and Vietnam (up 36.7%).

The sole top coffee exporter was the United States, via its -7.5% slowdown over the 5-year period.

Advantages

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for coffee during 2017. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s coffee exports and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. Brazil: US$4.5 billion (net export surplus down -0.6% since 2013)
  2. Vietnam: $3.4 billion (up 37%)
  3. Colombia: $2.6 billion (up 36.4%)
  4. Switzerland: $1.5 billion (up 1.5%)
  5. Honduras: $1.16 billion (up 39.3%)
  6. Indonesia: $1.15 billion (up 1.7%)
  7. Ethiopia: $937.2 million (up 54.7%)
  8. Guatemala: $747.5 million (up 4.4%)
  9. Peru: $704.2 million (up 1.1%)
  10. Uganda: $538.5 million (up 27%)
  11. Nicaragua: $505.3 million (up 43.8%)
  12. India: $374.3 million (down -15.8%)
  13. Mexico: $323.2 million (down -27%)
  14. Costa Rica: $296.3 million (down -2%)
  15. Kenya: $226 million (up 18.9%)

Brazil has the highest surplus in the international trade of coffee. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms Brazil’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.

Opportunities

The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for coffee during 2017. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s coffee import purchases and its exports for that same commodity.

  1. United States: -US$5.4 billion (net export deficit up 20.5% since 2013)
  2. France: -$1.7 billion (down -7.7%)
  3. Japan: -$1.4 billion (down -10.9%)
  4. Germany: -$875.1 million (down -30.3%)
  5. Spain: -$800.7 million (up 42.2%)
  6. United Kingdom: -$696.4 million (up 94%)
  7. Canada: -$671.9 million (down -7.5%)
  8. South Korea: -$651.6 million (up 60.1%)
  9. Russia: -$602.8 million (up 29.2%)
  10. Netherlands: -$535.7 million (up 124%)
  11. Australia: -$478.5 million (up 14.7%)
  12. Austria: -$353 million (up 0.4%)
  13. Sweden: -$346.3 million (up 10.7%)
  14. Algeria: -$331.4 million (up 4.8%)
  15. Finland: -$237.6 million (up 10.5%)

United States has the highest deficit in the international trade of coffee. In turn, this negative cashflow confirms America’s strong competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for coffee-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful consumer demand.

Coffee Exporting Companies

According to the Tropical Commodity Coalition (TCC), green coffee beans are a minimally processed product accounting for approximately 95% of coffee exports. Ironically, coffee-producing countries earn very little from the sale and export of their products given that a large share of coffee supply chain profits go to middlemen and large roaster conglomerates.
