Global purchases of imported cotton in 2018 totaled US$54.8 billion. Overall, the value of cotton imported into all importing countries dropped by an average -2.4% since 2014 when cotton purchases were valued at $56.1 billion. In contrast, global cotton imports accelerated by 11% from 2017 to 2018.

From a continental perspective, Asian countries bought about two-thirds (66.8%) of worldwide cotton imports. Smaller percentages of the global total were imported into Europe (14.5%), Africa (8.5%), Latin America (6%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, North America (3.9%) and Oceania (0.2%) mainly Australia and New Zealand.

The two-digit Harmonized Tariff System code for cotton is 52. This broad category includes raw cotton, cotton yarn, thread and woven fabrics.

Top Cotton Imports by Country

Below are the 15 countries that purchased the highest dollar value worth of imported cotton during 2018.

  1. China: US$9.9 billion (18.1% of total cotton imports)
  2. Bangladesh: $6.6 billion (12%)
  3. Vietnam: $5.1 billion (9.3%)
  4. Turkey: $2.5 billion (4.6%)
  5. Indonesia: $2.4 billion (4.4%)
  6. Hong Kong: $1.4 billion (2.5%)
  7. South Korea: $1.3 billion (2.3%)
  8. Pakistan: $1.2 billion (2.3%)
  9. Italy: $1.2 billion (2.1%)
  10. Mexico: $1.05 billion (1.9%)
  11. Germany: $1.03 billion (1.9%)
  12. United States: $961.7 million (1.8%)
  13. Egypt: $905.9 million (1.7%)
  14. Thailand: $863.9 million (1.6%)
  15. India: $843.6 million (1.5%)


 

By value, the listed 15 cotton importers represent over two-thirds (67.8%) of global cotton imports during 2018.

Four among the above countries showed increased demand for internationally-sourced cotton since 2014 were: Pakistan (up 67.7%), Vietnam (up 58.7%), Egypt (up 33.3%) and India (up 12.7%).

Those countries that posted declines in their imported cotton purchases were led by: Hong Kong (down -46.8%), Italy (down -26.7%), China (down -22.5%) and Germany (down -17.5%).
