International purchases of imported electric cars totaled US$7.7 billion in 2017. That dollar amount represents 4.3% of all globally imported cars over the same year.

From a continental perspective, European countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of imported electric cars during 2017 with purchases valued at $4.6 billion or about three-fifths (59.4%) of the global total. In second place were Asian importers at 27.4% while 10.9% of electric cars imported worldwide was sold to North America.

Smaller percentages went to Oceania (1.9%) led by Australia and New Zealand, Latin America plus the Caribbean (0.2%) then Africa (0.1%).

The 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 870380 for electric cars. 2017 is the first year that code prefix was used, so there is no data from prior periods against which to compare the latest annual data.
