Worldwide sales from electronic circuit component exports by country totaled US$628.9 billion in 2017.

Overall, the value of electronic circuit component exports rose by an average 24.5% for all exporting countries since 2013 when electronic circuit component shipments were valued at $505.2 billion. The year-over-year uptick was 20% from 2016 to 2017.

Among continents, Asian suppliers accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported electronic circuit components during 2017 with shipments valued at $542.2 billion or 86.2% of the global total. In second place were European exporters with a 7.2% share while 6.6% of total international sales for electronic circuit components originated from North America.

Much smaller percentages came from Africa (0.04%), Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean (0.02%) then Oceania (0.01%).

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 8542 for electronic integrated circuits and microassemblies including related parts.

Electronic Circuit Component Exports by Country

  13. Thailand: $8.3 billion (1.3%)
  14. France: $6.7 billion (1.1%)
  15. Ireland: $5.3 billion (0.8%)

The listed 15 countries shipped 97.4% of global electronic circuit component exports in 2017 by value.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing electronic circuit component exporters since 2013 were: Vietnam (up 602.5%), Ireland (up 432.6%), South Korea (up 82.7%) and Hong Kong (up 67.9%).

Four countries incurred declines in their exported electronic circuit component sales namely China (down -24.3%), France (down -13.1%), Singapore (down -3.6%) and Japan (down -1.2%).

Advantages

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for electronic circuit components during 2017. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported electronic circuit components and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. South Korea: US$52.7 billion (net export surplus up 173.1% since 2013)
  2. Taiwan: $48.8 billion (up 58%)
  3. Singapore: $20.8 billion (down -12.2%)
  4. Japan: $7.2 billion (down -31.2%)
  5. Philippines: $5.3 billion (up 930.3%)
  6. Ireland: $4.9 billion (up 827.2%)
  7. United States: $4.6 billion (down -9.2%)
  8. France: $2.6 billion (up 8.7%)
  9. Malaysia: $1.9 billion (up 56%)
  10. Israel: $1.8 billion (down -21%)
  11. Malta: $301.2 million (up 242.7%)
  12. Belgium: $123.4 million (reversing a -$84 million deficit)
  13. Namibia: $72.6 million (reversing a -$1.3 million deficit)
  14. Belarus: $24.8 million (down -34.6%)
  15. Montserrat: $9.4 million (reversing a -$1,000 deficit)

In 2017, South Korea overtook Taiwan for having the highest surplus in the international trade of electronic circuit components. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms strong Korean competitive advantages for this specific product category.

Opportunities

The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for electronic circuit components during 2017. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s imported electronic circuit components purchases and its exports for that same commodity.

  1. China: -US$192.1 billion (net export deficit up 33.2% since 2013)
  2. Hong Kong: -$27 billion (up 92.1%)
  3. Mexico: -$14.2 billion (up 21.0%)
  4. Brazil: -$4.1 billion (down -13.3%)
  5. Vietnam: -$3.9 billion (down -51.7%)
  6. Thailand: -$3 billion (up 51.1%)
  7. Czech Republic: -$2.8 billion (up 96.5%)
  8. Germany: -$2.22 billion (up 764.6%)
  9. Hungary: -$2.21 billion (up 34.1%)
  10. Poland: -$1.8 billion (up 0.5%)
  11. India: -$1.5 billion (down -10.8%)
  12. Romania: -$1.13 billion (up 70.3%)
  13. Indonesia: -$1.05 billion (down -2.1%)
  14. Canada: -$1 billion (down -42.8%)
  15. Russia: -$1 billion (up 139%)

China incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of electronic circuit components–not surprising when one considers the People’s Republic’s leading role in producing fully assembled computer products that depend on such components. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights Chinese competitive disadvantages for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for electronic circuit components-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
