Worldwide, frozen vegetables exports by country totaled US$6.7 billion in 2018, up by 7.5% for all frozen vegetables shippers over the five-year period starting in 2014. Year over year, the value of exported frozen vegetables increased 5.4% from 2017 to 2018.

By subcategory, the most valuable type of exported frozen vegetables is the catchall classification for miscellaneous vegetables which comprises 56.1% of the overall total for frozen veggies. This catchall includes frozen asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, mushrooms, carrots, artichokes and others.

Other subcategories trailing the catchall are frozen mixed vegetables (13.1%), peas (7.2%), sweet corn (6.4%), beans (5.6%), spinach (4.8%), leguminous vegetables (4.5%) ahead of frozen potatoes (2.4%).

Applying a continental lens, Europe sold the highest dollar worth of exported frozen vegetables during 2018 with shipments valued at $3.6 billion or 53.4% of the international total. In second place were Asian exporters at 23.4% while 13.2% of worldwide frozen vegetables shipments originated from North America. Smaller percentages came from Latin America (5.6%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (3%) then Oceania (1.4%) led by New Zealand.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for frozen vegetables is 0710.

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped 82.8% of all frozen vegetables exported in 2018.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing frozen vegetables exporters since 2014 were: Ecuador (up 135.7%), Guatemala (up 108.4%), Spain (up 40.9%) and United States (up 19.1%).

Five leading countries posted declines in their exported frozen vegetables sales namely: Netherlands (down -33.8%), Hungary (down -16.1%), France (down -10.6%), Germany (down -9.4%) and Belgium (down -3.1%).

The People’s Republic of China has the highest surplus in the international trade of frozen vegetables. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms mainland China’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.

Densely populated Japan incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of frozen vegetables. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights Japan’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for frozen vegetables-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
