Frozen vegetables exports by country totaled US$6.3 billion in 2017, up by 2.8% for all frozen vegetables shippers over the five-year period starting in 2013. Globally, the value of exported frozen vegetables increased 4.2% from 2016 to 2017.

By subcategory, the most valuable type of exported frozen vegetables is the catchall classification for miscellaneous vegetables which comprises 55.1% of the overall total for frozen veggies. This catchall includes frozen asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, mushrooms, carrots, artichokes and others.

Other subcategories trailing the catchall are frozen mixed vegetables (13.4%), peas (7.3%), sweetcorn (6.5%), beans (5.6%), spinach (4.6%), leguminous vegetables (4.5%) ahead of frozen potatoes (3%).

Among continents, European countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported frozen vegetables during 2017 with shipments valued at $3.3 billion or 52.8% of the international total. In second place were Asian exporters at 24.4% while 13.2% of worldwide frozen vegetables shipments originated from North America. Smaller percentages came from Latin America (4.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (3.7%) then Oceania (1.4%) led by New Zealand.

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for frozen vegetables is 0710.

The listed 15 countries shipped 83.1% of all frozen vegetables exported in 2017 by value.

Among these top suppliers, the fastest-growing frozen vegetables exporters since 2013 were: Ecuador (up 149.8%), Spain (up 41.1%), United States (up 30.6%) and China (up 16%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported frozen vegetables sales were led by: Netherlands (down -23.5%), Poland (down -23.1%), New Zealand (down -21.5%), Egypt (down -17.2%) and France (down -16.8%).

The People’s Republic of China has the highest surplus in the international trade of frozen vegetables. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms mainland China’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.
