International sales for exported hot chocolate by country totaled US$2.3 billion during 2018 specifically for unsweetened cocoa powder (or 85.1% of the total) plus another $398.1 million for sweetened cocoa powder (or 14.9% of the total).

Overall, the value of hot chocolate exports in 2018 equaled $2.7 billion. That dollar amount reflects -4% depreciation from 2017 to 2018 but a 4.3% upswing since 2014.

From a continental perspective, 58.6% of total hot chocolate exports originated from Europe while 25.2% were shipped from Asia. Smaller percentages came from North America (6.5%), Africa (6%), Latin America (3.5%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, then Oceania (0.3%) led by Australia.

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for unsweetened cocoa powder is 1805. The 6-digit prefix for sweetened cocoa powder is 180610.

Those countries that posted declines in their exported hot chocolate sales were led by: Brazil (down -21.3%), Malaysia (down -11.5%), France (down -9.8%), Ivory Coast (down -6.3%) and Mexico (down -2.9%).

  5. Indonesia: $146.1 million (6.4%)

  7. Singapore: $134.9 million (5.9%)
  8. Ghana: $79.3 million (3.5%)
  9. United States: $78 million (3.4%)
  10. Ivory Coast: $59.1 million (2.6%)

  4. South Korea: $32.4 million (8.1%)
  5. Malaysia: $29.8 million (7.5%)
  6. Ireland: $27.7 million (7%)
  7. Hungary: $23.9 million (6%)
  8. Italy: $17.5 million (4.4%)
  9. Thailand: $17.4 million (4.4%)
  10. United Kingdom: $14.1 million (3.5%)

Those countries that posted declines in their exported sweetened cocoa powder sales were led by: Singapore (down -60.1%), Germany (down -29%), United Kingdom (down -25.7%), France (down -21.1%) and Hungary (down -12.6%).
