International sales for exported hot chocolate by country totaled US$2.4 billion during 2017 in terms of unsweetened cocoa powder plus another $396.7 million for sweetened cocoa powder.

Overall, the value of hot chocolate exports in 2017 equaled $2.8 billion. That dollar amount reflects a -2.6% decline from 2016 to 2017 and a -9.2% depreciation since 2013.

From a continental perspective, 57.7% of total hot chocolate exports originated from Europe while 25.9% were shipped from Asia. Smaller percentages came from North America (6.8%), Africa (5.5%), Latin America (3.8%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, then Oceania (0.3%) led by Australia.

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for unsweetened cocoa powder is 1805. The 6-digit prefix for sweetened cocoa powder is 180610.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing hot chocolate exporters since 2013 were: Ghana (up 1,365%), Belgium (up 221.9%), Italy (up 52.2%) and Indonesia (up 37.8%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported hot chocolate sales were led by: Brazil (down -38.6%), France (down -37.1%), Mexico (down -31.8%), Malaysia (down -26.7%) and Côte d’Ivoire (down -23.6%).

  2. Malaysia: $269.2 million (11.2%)
  3. Germany: $254.4 million (10.6%)
  4. Spain: $169.7 million (7.1%)
  5. Indonesia: $152.2 million (6.4%)
  6. France: $134.2 million (5.6%)
  7. Singapore: $127.2 million (5.3%)
  8. United States: $88.6 million (3.7%)
  9. Ghana: $68.2 million (2.8%)
  10. Côte d’Ivoire: $67.3 million (2.8%)
  11. Brazil: $62.2 million (2.6%)

Those countries that posted declines in their exported unsweetened cocoa powder sales were led by: Brazil (down -38.9%), France (down -37.7%), Malaysia (down -27.8%), Côte d’Ivoire (down -23.6%) and Netherlands (down -14.9%).

  1. Germany: US$50 million (12.6% of exported sweetened cocoa powder)
  2. Mexico: $46.3 million (11.7%)
  3. South Korea: $34.8 million (8.8%)
  4. United States: $27.5 million (6.9%)
  5. Hungary: $25.6 million (6.4%)
  6. Malaysia: $25.1 million (6.3%)
  7. Ireland: $23.6 million (5.9%)
  8. United Kingdom: $18.1 million (4.6%)
  9. Thailand: $16.7 million (4.2%)
  10. Italy: $14.2 million (3.6%)
  11. Saudi Arabia: $12 million (3%)
  12. Singapore: $9.6 million (2.4%)
  13. Sweden: $7.8 million (2%)

The above countries produced 81.8% of sweetened cocoa powder exports in 2017.

Five among the above countries posted increases in the international sales of sweetened cocoa powder since 2013. Gainers were Saudi Arabia (up 886%), Thailand (up 116.5%), South Korea (up 31.8%) and Sweden (up 24.8%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported sweetened cocoa powder sales were led by: Netherlands (down -73.9%), Singapore (down -56.8%), Germany (down -38.1%), Mexico (down -33.7%) and France (down -24.3%).
