Worldwide purchases of imported milk totaled an estimated US$27.7 billion in 2018.

Overall, the value of milk imports declined by -26.9% for all importer countries since 2014 when import purchases of milk were valued at $37.8 billion. Year over year, international purchases of milk depreciated by -6.4% from 2017 to 2018.

From a continental perspective, Asian countries imported the highest dollar worth of milk during 2018 with purchases valued at $11.6 billion or 41.9% of the global total. In second place were European importers at 37.9% while 10.5% of the world’s imported milk was delivered to Africa. Smaller percentages arrived in Latin America (5%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, North America (3.3%) and Oceania (1.1%) led by Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

The metrics below combine subtotals for two 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefixes for milk. Specifically, those prefixes are 0401 for unsweetened milk and 0402 for milk concentrated or containing added sugar or other sweetening ingredients.

Unsweetened milk imports under HTS prefix 0401 amounted to $9.4 billion (34% of the global total) while sweetened milk items under code 0402 cost $18.3 billion (66%).

Below are the 15 countries that imported the highest dollar value worth of milk during 2018, including both sweetened and unsweetened varieties.

  4. Belgium: $1.4 billion (5.1%)
  5. Netherlands: $1.3 billion (4.6%)
  6. Italy: $1.1 billion (4.1%)
  7. Algeria: $1.1 billion (4%)
  8. France: $907.8 million (3.3%)
  9. Mexico: $754.4 million (2.7%)
  10. Indonesia: $525.4 million (1.9%)
  11. Malaysia: $522.2 million (1.9%)
  12. United Arab Emirates: $520.6 million (1.9%)
  13. Philippines: $507.6 million (1.8%)
  14. Russian Federation: $488.1 million (1.8%)
  15. Singapore: $467 million (1.7%)

By value, the listed 15 countries purchased 59.4% of all milk imports in 2018. Within parenthesis is the percentage of globally imported milk for each importer.

Among these top milk markets, only Netherlands expanded its purchases since 2014 via a 23.8% increase.

Those countries that posted declines in their imported milk purchases were led by: United Arab Emirates (down -56.9%), Russia (down -49.1%), Indonesia (down -42.3%) and Algeria (down -38.5%).

Among all listed geographies, the fastest-growing markets for milk since 2014 were: Macao (up 833.7%), Rwanda (up 352.4%), Cambodia (up 345.5%) and Timor-Leste (up 245.7%).

Those countries that posted declines in their imported milk purchases were led by: South Sudan (down -98.2%), Belarus (down -92.2%), Iran (down -91.9%), Zimbabwe (down -91.4%) then Burundi (down -89.5%).
