Mood-improving scents remain in demand around the world, with perfumes exported by country totaling US$20.3 billion in 2018.

Overall, the value of exported perfumes rose by an average 6.6% for all exporting countries since 2014 when perfumes shipments were valued at $19.1 billion. Year over year, the value of international sales for perfumes appreciated by 6.9% from 2017 to 2018.

Among continents, European countries sold the highest dollar worth of exported perfumes during 2018 with shipments from Europe valued at $14.5 billion or over two-thirds (71.5%) of the global total. In second place were Asian exporters at 17.2%, while 9.7% of worldwide shipments originated from North America. Smaller percentages came from Latin America (0.9%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (0.5%) then Oceania (0.2%) led by Australia.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for perfumes and toilet waters is 3303. This code prefix specifically excludes aftershave lotions, personal deodorants and hair lotions.

Below are the 15 countries that sold the highest dollar value worth of exported perfumes during 2018.

  2. Spain: $2.2 billion (10.6%)
  3. Germany: $2 billion (9.9%)
  4. United States: $1.8 billion (8.8%)
  5. Italy: $1.3 billion (6.5%)
  6. United Arab Emirates: $1.2 billion (5.7%)
  7. Singapore: $1.1 billion (5.5%)
  8. United Kingdom: $666.3 million (3.3%)
  9. Netherlands: $571.5 million (2.8%)
  10. Poland: $541.3 million (2.7%)
  11. Belgium: $489.3 million (2.4%)
  12. Czech Republic: $425.1 million (2.1%)
  13. Switzerland: $327.6 million (1.6%)
  14. Hong Kong: $301.4 million (1.5%)
  15. China: $171.5 million (0.8%)

The listed 15 countries shipped 90.2% of global perfumes exports in 2018 by value.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing perfumes exporters since 2014 were: Czech Republic (up 150.6%), China (up 48.8%), Poland (up 39.4%) and Singapore (up 38.6%).

Five countries posted declines in their exported perfumes sales namely: United Kingdom (down -35.5%), Germany (down -11.8%), Belgium (down -8.2%), United States (down -2.8%) and Netherlands (down -1.1%).

Advantages

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for perfumes during 2018. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported perfumes and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. France: US$4.8 billion (net export surplus up 3.5% since 2014)
  2. Spain: $1.3 billion (up 51%)
  3. Italy: $767.4 million (up 30.1%)
  4. United Arab Emirates: $238.3 million (reversing a -$151.7 million deficit)
  5. Singapore: $207.3 million (up 66%)
  6. Germany: $167.2 million (down -70.8%)
  7. Poland: $124.5 million (up 15%)
  8. Switzerland: $104.5 million (up 78.1%)
  9. Colombia: $54.7 million (down -1.3%)
  10. India: $46 million (down -34.6%)
  11. Ivory Coast: $35.5 million (up 42.7%)
  12. Belgium: $31.3 million (down -82.1%)
  13. Lebanon: $5.1 million (reversing a -$490,000 deficit)
  14. Barbados: $2 million (reversing a -$2.5 million deficit)
  15. Senegal: $1.8 million (down -56.6%)

France has the highest surplus in the international trade of perfumes. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms France’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.

The United States of America incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of perfumes. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights America’s strong competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for perfumes-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
