International purchases of imported raw potatoes cost an estimated US$4.4 billion in 2018.

Overall, the value of raw potatoes imports rose by 1.7% for all importing countries since 2014 when international purchases of fresh or chilled potatoes were valued at $4.3 billion. Year over year, imported potatoes depreciated by -3.4% from 2017 to 2018.

From a continental perspective, European countries bought the most imported raw potatoes during 2018 with purchases valued at $2.7 billion or 61.8% of the global total. In second place were Asian importers at 18.3% while 9% of potatoes imported worldwide was delivered to North America with 8.3% going to North America. Smaller percentages went to Latin America (2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and Oceania (0.5%) led by Fiji).

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for fresh or chilled potatoes is 0701.

Below are the 15 countries that imported the highest dollar value worth of raw potatoes during 2018.

  1. Belgium: US$542.2 million (12.4% of total raw potatoes imports)
  2. Netherlands: $362.2 million (8.3%)

  4. United States: $243.8 million (5.6%)
  5. Germany: $238.2 million (5.4%)
  6. Russia: $217.9 million (5%)
  7. Italy: $187.7 million (4.3%)
  8. Portugal: $112 million (2.6%)
  9. United Kingdom: $110.9 million (2.5%)
  10. France: $110.2 million (2.5%)
  11. Vietnam: $100.1 million (2.3%)
  12. Canada: $91.2 million (2.1%)
  13. Egypt: $83.4 million (1.9%)

By value, the listed 15 countries purchased 64% of all potatoes imported during 2018. Within parenthesis is the percentage of overall potatoes shipments for each importer.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing markets for raw potatoes since 2014 were: Vietnam (up 680.3%), Belgium (up 56.4%), Netherlands (up 38.4%) and United States (up 32.0%).

Those countries that posted declines in their imported raw potatoes purchases were led by: Russia (down -43%), Egypt (down -25.1%), United Kingdom (down -18.5%) and Italy (down -9.5%).

Belgium

Belgium’s global purchases of imported raw potatoes totaled US$542.2 million in 2018. Below are the top 15 suppliers from which Belgium imported the highest dollar value worth of potatoes during 2018. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country since 2014.

  1. France: US$245.2 million (up 40.3% from 2014)
  2. Netherlands: $150.1 million (up 34.3%)
  3. Germany: $98.6 million (up 221.8%)
  4. Spain: $18.6 million (up 55.5%)
  5. Israel: $9.1 million (up 105.9%)
  6. United Kingdom: $9 million (up 207%)
  7. Cyprus: $5.2 million (down -14.4%)
  8. Italy: $2.2 million (up 22.8%)
  9. Luxembourg: $1.6 million (down -1.9%)

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing suppliers of raw potatoes to Belgium since 2014 were: Egypt (up 3,780%), Poland (up 1,813%), Germany (up 221.8%) and United Kingdom (up 207%).

Two of these countries experienced declines in the value of their raw potatoes supplied to Belgian importers namely Cyprus (down -14.4%) and Luxembourg (down -1.9%).

Overall, the value of Belgium’s raw potatoes imports rose by an average 56.4% from all supplying countries since 2014 when raw potatoes purchased were valued at $346.8 million.

Netherlands

Dutch global purchases of imported raw potatoes totaled US$362.2 million in 2018. Below are the top 15 suppliers from which the Netherlands imported the highest dollar value worth of potatoes during 2018. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country since 2014.

  1. Germany: US$176.7 million (up 23% from 2014)
  2. Belgium: $70.6 million (up 53.2%)
  3. France: $65 million (up 130.6%)
  4. Israel: $21.4 million (down -3.3%)
  5. Spain: $6.5 million (up 99.3%)
  6. United Kingdom: $5.9 million (up 70.6%)
  7. Italy: $4.2 million (up 228.6%)
  8. Denmark: $2 million (up 147.4%)
  9. Portugal: $1.9 million (up 47.1%)
  10. Poland: $1.7 million (no 2014 data)
  11. Malta: $1.4 million (down -7.3%)

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing suppliers of raw potatoes to Netherlands since 2014 were: Italy (up 228.6%), Denmark (up 147.4%), France (up 130.6%) and Spain (up 99.3%).

Three countries experienced declines in the value of their raw potatoes supplied to Dutch importers namely: Morocco (down -76.5%), Malta (down -7.3%) and Israel (down -3.3%).

Overall, the value of Netherlands’ raw potatoes imports expanded by an average 38.4% from all supplying countries since 2014 when raw potatoes purchased were valued at $261.8 million.

Spain’s global purchases of imported raw potatoes totaled US$246.7 million in 2018. Below are the top 15 suppliers from which Spain imported the highest dollar value worth of potatoes during 2018. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country since 2014.

  2. United Kingdom: $34.5 million (up 18.4%)
  3. Netherlands: $26.2 million (down -34.8%)

Countries that experienced declines in the value of their raw potatoes supplied to Spanish importers included: Belgium (down -55.2%), Netherlands (down -34.8%), Morocco (down -21.1%) and Cyprus (down -13.5%).

Overall, the value of Spain’s raw potatoes imports accelerated by an average 22.8% from all supplying countries since 2014 when raw potatoes purchased were valued at $200.9 million.

America’s global purchases of imported raw potatoes totaled US$243.8 million in 2018. Below are the top six suppliers from which the United States imported the highest dollar value worth of potatoes during 2018. Within parenthesis is the percentage change in value for each supplying country since 2014.

  1. Canada: US$243.7 million (up 32% from 2014)
  2. Colombia: $96,000 (up 92%)
  3. Ecuador: $43,000 (no 2014 data)
  4. China: $32,000 (no 2014 data)
  5. Peru: $6,000 (down -94.7%)
  6. Costa Rica: $3,000 (no 2014 data)

The listed six countries shipped 100% of all America’s imported raw potatoes in 2018.

Overall, the value of United States’ raw potatoes imports increased by an average 32% from all supplying countries since 2014 when raw potatoes purchased were valued at $184.8 million.
