Top Paint Exports by Country

Total combined exports of different types of paint by country totaled US$22.4 billion in 2018. That dollar amount reflects a modest -0.02% decrease for global paint shippers over the five-year period starting in 2014. Year over year, international sales of paint gained 7% from 2017 to 2018.

The value of exported paint made from synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers amounted to $21.5 billion or 96.1% of the global total in 2018. Just 3.9% of the global total ($876.4 million) represents paint made from non-synthetic ingredients.

Among continents, European countries sold the highest dollar worth of exported paint during 2018 with shipments totaling $14 billion or over three-fifths (62.3%) of the overall total. In second place were Asian exporters at 21.6% while 13% of worldwide paint shipments originated from North America. Smaller percentages came from Latin America (1.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (1.3%) then Oceania (0.5%) led by Australia and New Zealand.

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefixes are 3208 and 3209 for paints and varnishes including enamels and lacquers based on synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers. Paints from other materials fall under the 3210 code prefix. Excluded from this research are prepared pigments, opacifiers and colors classified under 3207.

Overall, the 20 countries below exported the highest dollar value worth of paint during 2018.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing paint exporters since 2014 were: Canada (up 23%), Poland (up 17.2%), Japan (up 16.6%) and Italy (up 8.2%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported paint sales were led by: Turkey (down -23.3%), Sweden (down -20.6%), Singapore (down -19%) and Switzerland (down -16.1%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported synthetic paint sales were led by: United Kingdom (down -12.7%), Belgium (down -7.6%), China (down -4.9%) and Malaysia (down -4.8%).
