Top Paint Exports by Country

Total combined exports of different types of paint by country totaled US$20.8 billion in 2017.

That dollar amount reflects a -4.8% decrease for global paint shippers over the five-year period starting in 2013 when $21.8 billion worth of exported paint was sold. Year over year, international sales of paint appreciated by 6.5% from 2016 to 2017.

The value of exported paint made from synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers amounted to $19.9 billion in 2017. Just 4% of the global total ($822.6 million) represents paint made from other ingredients.

Among continents, European countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported paint during 2017 with shipments totaling $12.4 billion or roughly three-fifths (59.9%) of the worldwide total. In second place were Asian exporters at 23.1% while 13.3% of worldwide paint shipments originated from North America. Smaller percentages came from Latin America (1.7%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (1.4%) then Oceania (0.6%) led by Australia and New Zealand.

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefixes are 3208 and 3209 for paints and varnishes including enamels and lacquers based on synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers. Paints from other materials fall under the 3210 code prefix. Excluded are prepared pigments, opacifiers and colors which are formally classified under 3207.

Overall

Overall, the 20 countries below exported the highest dollar value worth of paint during 2017.

  4. Italy: $1.5 billion (7.3%)
  5. France: $999.7 million (4.8%)

  7. Belgium: $893.4 million (4.3%)
  8. United Kingdom: $862.1 million (4.2%)
  9. Spain: $691.7 million (3.3%)

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing paint exporters since 2013 were: Canada (up 16%), Poland (up 14.5%), Japan (up 10.5%) and South Korea (up 9.4%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported paint sales were led by: Turkey (down -30.7%), Sweden (down -27.6%), Belgium (down -24.5%) and Switzerland (down -17.5%).

Below are the 20 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of paint made from synthetic or chemically modified natural polymers during 2017.

  4. Italy: $1.5 billion (7.4%)

Those countries that posted declines in these exported paint sales were led by: Switzerland (down -16.4%), United Kingdom (down -14.4%), Austria (down -12.3%) and Singapore (down -11.6%).

Those countries that posted declines in their international sales under the other paint category were led by: Singapore (down -49.1%), Taiwan (down -31.9%), United Kingdom (down -27.4%) and Turkey (down -25.7%).
