Advantages

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for pesticides during 2017. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported pesticides and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. China: US$4.1 billion (net export surplus up 33.8% since 2013)
  2. United States: $2.64 billion (down -9.4%)
  3. Germany: $2.59 billion (up 13%)
  4. France: $1.6 billion (up 22%)
  5. Israel: $1.2 billion (up 83.9%)
  6. Belgium: $1.1 billion (down -6.3%)
  7. India: $813.6 million (down -39.3%)
  8. Singapore: $374.1 million (up 248.9%)
  9. Spain: $352.7 million (up 15.8%)
  10. United Kingdom: $344.2 million (down -47.3%)
  11. South Korea: $213.4 million (up 135.1%)
  12. Hungary: $199.1 million (reversing a -$110.2 million deficit)
  13. Switzerland: $186.2 million (down -78.2%)
  14. Austria: $171.6 million (reversing a -$1.8 million deficit)
  15. Denmark: $83 million (reversing a -$16.9 million deficit)

The People’s Republic of China has the highest surplus in the international trade of pesticides. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms strong Chinese competitive advantage for this specific product category.

Opportunities

The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for pesticides during 2017. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s imported pesticides purchases and its exports for that same commodity.

  1. Brazil: -US$2.2 billion (net export deficit down -17.9% since 2013)
  2. Canada: -$1.7 billion (up 17.2%)
  3. Ukraine: -$921.2 million (up 22.9%)
  4. Russia: -$746.7 million (up 66.5%)
  5. Australia: -$725.8 million (up 35%)

  13. Nigeria: -$298.3 million (up 19.3%)
  14. Paraguay: -$292.4 million (up 1.9%)
  15. Turkey: -$277.9 million (up 14.8%)

Brazil incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of pesticides. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights Brazil’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for pesticides-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
