Heroin is a legitimate export product listed in the Harmonized Tariff System manual. Global sales from heroin exporters totaled US$343.8 million during 2018. That dollar figure reflects a -45.1% decrease since 2014 but a 4.3% gain from 2017 to 2018.

At least that’s international sales for the legally registered and traded versions of the chemical product.

The 6-digit HTS code is 293911 for poppy straw concentrates, buprenorphine, codeine, dihydrocode and ethylmorphine.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of heroin during 2018.

  1. United Kingdom: US$136.5 million (39.7% of total heroin exports)
  2. Spain: $49.6 million (14.4%)
  3. Czech Republic: $44.3 million (12.9%)
  4. United States: $24.5 million (7.1%)
  5. Switzerland: $21 million (6.1%)
  6. Belgium: $14.9 million (4.3%)
  7. Turkey: $9.3 million (2.7%)
  8. Norway: $9 million (2.6%)
  9. Australia: $8.3 million (2.4%)
  10. Italy: $7 million (2%)
  11. Slovakia: $6.1 million (1.8%)
  12. Hungary: $4.7 million (1.4%)
  13. Iran: $3 million (0.9%)
  14. Denmark: $2.9 million (0.9%)
  15. Netherlands: $901,000 (0.3%)

The listed 15 countries shipped 99.6% of all heroin exports in 2018.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing heroin exporters since 2014 were: Denmark (up 115.6%), Hungary (up 113.7%), Australia (up 91.7%) and Czech Republic (up 91.1%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported heroin sales were led by: Turkey (down -73%), United Kingdom (down -65.9%), Belgium (down -54.7%), Netherlands (down -50.8%) and Norway (down -24.7%).
