Global sales from heroin exporters totaled US$485.6 million during 2016. That figure represents a 32% increase since 2012 but a -18.1% drop from 2015 to 2016.

At least that’s the count from the legally registered and traded versions of the drug–the legitimate export product formally listed in the Harmonized Tariff System manual.

The 6-digit HTS code for poppy straw concentrates, buprenorphine, codeine and dihydrocode is 293911.

Among continents, European countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported heroin during 2016 with shipments valued at $430 million or 88.5% of the global total. In second place were Asian exporters at 8%. Smaller percentages of the worldwide heroin shipments came from Oceania including Australia (1.9%) and North America (1.6%).

  11. Italy: $3.6 million (0.74%)
  12. Iran: $3.5 million (0.72%)

The listed 15 countries were responsible for 99.7% of all heroin exports in 2016 by value.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing heroin exporters since 2012 were: Netherlands (up 2,943%), Australia (up 409.7%), Slovakia (up 247.8%) and Denmark (up 234.7%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported heroin sales were led by: United States (down -78.3%), Hungary (down -77.0%), Iran (down -64.5%), Norway (down -47.2%) and Turkey (down -30.7%).

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for heroin during 2016. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported heroin and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. United Kingdom: US$244.4 million (net export surplus up 417.3% since 2012)
  2. Spain: $37.8 million (up 2.8%)
  3. Turkey: $35.1 million (down -30.6%)
  4. Czech Republic: $27.9 million (up 22%)
  5. Belgium: $23.1 million (up 4.4%)
  6. Iran: $3.5 million (down -56.1%)
  7. Slovakia: $3 million (up 2,774%)
  8. Norway: $2.7 million (down -56.5%)
  9. Netherlands: $813,000 (reversing a -$1.2 million deficit)
  10. Guyana: $34,000 (up 1,600%)

The United Kingdom has the highest surplus in the international trade of heroin. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms the UK’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.

Opportunities

The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for heroin during 2016. The United States incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of heroin. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights America’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for heroin-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
