Global sales from heroin exporters totaled US$328 million during 2017. That dollar figure represents a -39.22% decrease since 2013 and a -31.8% drop from 2016 to 2017.

At least that’s the score from the legally registered and traded versions of the drug–under the legitimate export product code formally listed in the Harmonized Tariff System manual. The 6-digit HTS code for poppy straw concentrates, buprenorphine, codeine and dihydrocode is 293911.

Among continents, European countries generated the highest dollar worth of exported heroin during 2017 with shipments valued at $274.3 million or 83.6% of the global total. In second place were North American exporters at 7.4% closely trailed by heroin shippers in Asia at 5.8%. Smaller percentages of the worldwide heroin exports came from Oceania notably Australia (3.1%), Latin America and the Caribbean (0.04%) and Africa (0.01%).

By value, the listed 15 countries were responsible for 99.8% of all heroin exports in 2017.

Five top exporters grew their heroin exports since 2013 namely Australia (up 1,119%), Poland (up 450%), Slovakia (up 349.8%) and Denmark (up 29.4%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported heroin sales were led by: United Kingdom (down -59.9%), Turkey (down -58.3%), India (down -44.6%), Italy (down -29.1%) and Switzerland (down -26.8%).

The United Kingdom has the highest surplus in the international trade of heroin. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms the UK’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.

The United States of America incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of heroin. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights America’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for heroin-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
