T-shirt exports by country totaled US$44.3 billion in 2017, up by an average 4.3% for all T-shirt exporters over the five-year period starting in 2013. Year over year, the value of globally exported T-shirts rose by 1.2% from 2016 to 2017.

Among continents, Asian countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported T-shirts (inclusive of all materials) during 2017 with shipments valued at $25.1 billion or 56.7% of worldwide exports.

In second place were European nations at 29.5%. Smaller percentages of total T-shirt exports were sourced from Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean (7.7%), North America (3.4%) and Africa (2.6%).

Cotton is the dominant material for T-shirt manufacturing. Cotton T-shirts accounted for $27.8 billion in international sales or almost two-thirds (63.3%) of total exported T-shirts. Similar apparel made from textiles other than cotton equaled $16.3 billion for the remaining 36.7%.

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix for knitted or crocheted T-shirt is 6109. Drilling down, cotton T-shirts fall under 610910 while T-shirts made from other materials are sub-categorized as 610990.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of T-shirts (regardless of source materials) during 2017:

  1. China: US$8.2 billion (18.5% of total T-shirt exports)
  2. Bangladesh: $5.9 billion (13.3%)
  3. Turkey: $2.9 billion (6.5%)
  4. Germany: $2.3 billion (5.1%)
  5. India: $1.9 billion (4.4%)
  6. Vietnam: $1.7 billion (3.8%)
  7. Belgium: $1.5 billion (3.4%)
  8. Italy: $1.5 billion (3.3%)
  9. Spain: $1.4 billion (3.1%)
  10. Netherlands: $1.2 billion (2.6%)
  11. Honduras: $1.1 billion (2.4%)
  12. Cambodia: $1 billion (2.4%)
  13. Portugal: $985 million (2.2%)
  14. France: $932.8 million (2.1%)

The listed 15 countries shipped about three-quarters (76.2%) of global T-shirt exports in 2017 by value.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing T-shirt exporters since 2013 were: Honduras (up 400,999%), Bangladesh (up 27.7%), Italy (up 25.5%) and Vietnam (up 20.8%).

Four countries posted declines in their international T-shirt sales: India (down -25%), Turkey (down -12.2%), China (down -9.8%) and Spain (down -6.3%).

  3. Turkey: $1.7 billion (5.9%)
  4. Germany: $1.4 billion (5%)
  5. India: $1.2 billion (4.4%)
  6. Italy: $1.1 billion (3.8%)
  7. Spain: $884.6 million (3.2%)
  8. Vietnam: $832.8 million (3%)
  9. Netherlands: $829.5 million (3%)
  10. Honduras: $823.9 million (2.9%)
  11. Portugal: $726 million (2.6%)
  12. Belgium: $694.7 million (2.5%)
  13. Hong Kong: $669 million (2.4%)

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped three-quarters about (75.5%) of cotton T-shirts exported in 2017.

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing cotton T-shirts exporters since 2013 were: Honduras (up 306,194%), Italy (up 42.1%), France (up 17.6%) and Bangladesh (up 16.9%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported cotton T-shirts sales were led by: India (down -33.8%), El Salvador (down -18.1%), Spain (down -13.6%), Belgium (down -12%) and China (down -8.7%).

  3. Germany: $866.4 million (5.3%)
  4. Vietnam: $856.6 million (5.3%)
  5. Belgium: $811.7 million (5%)
  6. Bangladesh: $748.8 million (4.6%)
  7. India: $703.1 million (4.3%)
  8. Cambodia: $611 million (3.8%)
  9. Spain: $504.4 million (3.1%)

Among the above countries, the fastest-growing non-cotton T-shirts exporters since 2013 were: Bangladesh (up 243.4%), Cambodia (up 211.4%), Netherlands (up 75.6%) and Vietnam (up 58.9%).

Four countries posted declines in their international non-cotton T-shirts sales namely Turkey (down -17.7%), China (down -10.8%), Italy (down -4.1%) and India (down -3.3%).
