The total value of imports into Canada sold by the European Union grew by 5.8% since 2024 when Canada’s purchases from the EU were valued at $61.8 billion.
Buyers in Canada exported $30.5 billion worth of products to the European Union in 2025. That dollar amount equals 46.6% versus total Canadian spending on commodities imported from the European Union. Just one year prior, that percentage was lower at 40.6%.
Canadian exports to the EU accelerated by 17.7% versus $25.1 billion in Canadian export sales to the European Union for 2024.
At year-end 2025, Canada incurred a -US$34.9 billion trade deficit importing and exporting with the EU. One year earlier, Canada’s trade deficit with the European Union was 4.9% higher at -$36.7 billion.
EU products driving negative trade balances at the expense of Canada were cars, medications, blood, wine and copper.
EU is an Economic Powerhouse
The European Union is comprised of 27 member states led by Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Romania, Netherlands and Belgium.
Adopting a worldwide perspective, the European Union ranks as the world’s leading exporter generating $7.361 trillion or 28.7% of total export sales for all countries in the prior year 2024. The latter export metric amounted to $25.609 trillion.
The EU’s percentage of global export revenues easily surpasses export sales for Canada (2.2%).
Just how powerful is the EU as an international trade entity? Well, consider that EU sales are almost twice the worldwide percentage recorded by exporters in China (14.7% versus 15.1% for 2024) and over three times those from the United States of America (8.5% versus 8.7%).
The European Union is also a significant international customer for all trading partners. The EU imported $7.154 trillion worth of products during 2025 or 27.7% of $25.789 trillion in worldwide imports.

The severest declines among Canada’s sales of exported goods to the European Union were recorded for shrinking EU spending on electronic integrated circuits or microassemblies (down -42.9% from 2024), aluminum waste or scrap (down -38.9%), coal including solid fuels made from coal (down -26%), radioactive chemical elements (down -25.3%) then beauty, makeup and skin care preparations (down -25.1%).
