Global beer brands

International sales from beer exports by country totaled US$15.8 billion for 2018. That dollar amount reflects a 15.7% appreciation for all beer shippers over the five-year period starting in 2014 when global beer sales were $13.6 billion, and an 8.3% uptick from 2017 to 2018.

Among continents, European countries accounted for the highest dollar worth of exported beer during 2018 with shipments valued at $8.8 billion or 55.8% of the worldwide total. In second place were North American beer exporters at 33.9% trailed by Asia at 6.9%.

Smaller percentages came from Latin America (1.8%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (1.3%) and Oceania (0.4%) led by New Zealand and Australia.

For research purposes, the 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 2203 for beer made from malt.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of beer during 2018.

  1. Mexico: US$4.5 billion (28.5% of total beer exports)
  2. Netherlands: $2 billion (12.9%)
  3. Belgium: $1.8 billion (11.1%)
  4. Germany: $1.4 billion (8.7%)
  5. United States: $737.6 million (4.7%)
  6. United Kingdom: $653 million (4.1%)
  7. France: $407.5 million (2.6%)
  8. Ireland: $331.1 million (2.1%)
  9. Czech Republic: $320.1 million (2%)
  10. Denmark: $293.4 million (1.9%)
  11. Spain: $253.9 million (1.6%)
  12. China: $252.5 million (1.6%)
  13. Italy: $230.1 million (1.5%)
  14. Poland: $203.1 million (1.3%)
  15. South Korea: $154.4 million (1%)

The listed 15 countries shipped 85.5% of all beer exports in 2018 by value.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing beer exporters since 2014 were: South Korea (up 111%), Mexico (up 86.3%), China (up 42.6%) and United States (up 36.1%).

Five top countries posted declines in their exported beer sales namely: United Kingdom (down -19.7%), Denmark (down -14.5%), France (down -12.9%), Germany (down -4.3%) and Netherlands (down -0.6%).

Advantages

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for beer during 2018. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported beer and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. Mexico: US$4.3 billion (net export surplus up 89.9% since 2014)
  2. Netherlands: $1.6 billion (down -8.2%)
  3. Belgium: $1.6 billion (up 35.6%)
  4. Germany: $848.8 million (up 6.8%)
  5. Czech Republic: $299.2 million (up 15.9%)
  6. Denmark: $230.7 million (down -18.7%)
  7. Poland: $133.9 million (up 0.9%)
  8. Ireland: $132.8 million (up 14%)
  9. Thailand: $105.9 million (down -50.2%)
  10. Portugal: $100.5 million (down -61.6%)
  11. Namibia: $79.8 million (up 6.3%)
  12. Dominican Republic: $67.1 million (up 416.1%)
  13. Japan: $61.2 million (reversing a -$2.3 million deficit)
  14. Brazil: $42.4 million (down -3.6%)
  15. Serbia: $36.6 million (down -39.2%)

Mexico has the highest surplus in the international trade of beer. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms the strong Mexican competitive advantage for this specific product category.

The following countries posted the highest negative net exports for beer during 2018. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the deficit between the value of each country’s imported beer purchases and its exports for that same commodity.

The United States of America incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of beer. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights America’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for beer-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
