Globally, computer accessories exports by country totaled US$144.8 billion in 2018.

That dollar amount reflects an 8.2% increase for all computer accessories shippers over the five-year period starting in 2014 when computer accessories shipments were valued at $133.8 billion. Year over year, the overall value of exported computer accessories accelerated by 20.3% from 2017 to 2018.

From a continental perspective, Asian countries sold the highest dollar worth of exported computer accessories during 2018 with shipments valued at $106.8 billion or almost three-quarters (73.7%) of the global total. In second place were North American exporters at 13.7% while 12.2% of worldwide computer accessories shipments originated from Europe.

Smaller percentages trace back to Oceania (0.2%) led by Australia, Africa (0.1%), Latin America (also 0.1%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.

The 4-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 8473 for computer parts and accessories other than covers and carrying cases.

Below are the 15 countries that exported the highest dollar value worth of computer accessories during 2018.

  1. China: US$45.3 billion (31.3% of total computer accessories exports)
  2. Hong Kong: $26.8 billion (18.5%)
  3. United States: $18.3 billion (12.6%)
  4. South Korea: $12.1 billion (8.4%)
  5. Taiwan: $7.8 billion (5.4%)
  6. Netherlands: $4.9 billion (3.4%)
  7. Germany: $4.4 billion (3%)
  8. Singapore: $4 billion (2.7%)
  9. Thailand: $2.7 billion (1.9%)
  10. Malaysia: $2.7 billion (1.8%)
  11. Japan: $1.8 billion (1.2%)
  12. United Kingdom: $1.5 billion (1%)
  13. Philippines: $1.3 billion (0.9%)
  14. Vietnam: $1.3 billion (0.9%)
  15. France: $1.3 billion (0.9%)

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped 94% of total exported computer accessories in 2018.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing computer accessories exporters since 2014 were: Vietnam (up 267.2%), South Korea (up 109.7%), China (up 45%) and Germany (up 34.8%).

Those countries that posted declines in their exported computer accessories sales were led by: Netherlands (down -53.5%), Malaysia (down -40.5%), Philippines (down -38.7%), Singapore (down -37.8%) and Thailand (down -26.2%).

The following countries posted the highest positive net exports for computer accessories during 2018. Investopedia defines net exports as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports. Thus, the statistics below present the surplus between the value of each country’s exported computer accessories and its import purchases for that same commodity.

  1. China: US$26.3 billion (net export surplus up 130.9% since 2014)
  2. South Korea: $7.4 billion (up 93.8%)
  3. Taiwan: $4.5 billion (up 0.3%)
  4. Hong Kong: $2.5 billion (down -64.9%)
  5. Thailand: $363.8 million (down -43.9%)
  6. Malaysia: $244.9 million (down -80.8%)
  7. Denmark: $120 million (up 2,683%)
  8. Israel: $81.5 million (reversing a -$16.2 million deficit)
  9. Indonesia: $65.8 million (reversing a -$189 million deficit)
  10. Vietnam: $53.2 million (reversing a -$651.8 million deficit)
  11. Namibia: $24.7 million (reversing a -$21.4 million deficit)
  12. Romania: $16.6 million (down -9.6%)
  13. Slovenia: $8.9 million (reversing a -$1.1 million deficit)
  14. Cambodia: $8.3 million (reversing a -$2.5 million deficit)
  15. Malta: $3.1 million (up 344.5%)

The People’s Republic of China has the highest surplus in the international trade of computer accessories. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms strong Chinese competitive advantage for this specific product category.

  13. Spain: -$764.3 million (up 30.3%)
  14. Philippines: -$517.4 million (reversing a $396.3 million surplus)
  15. France: -$405.6 million (down -55.6%)

The United States of America incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of computer accessories. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights America’s competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for computer accessories-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
