International sales from kiwifruit exports by country totaled US$3.1 billion in 2018. That dollar amount reflects a 34% appreciation since 2014 when exported kiwifruits were worth $2.3 billion, and a 12.5% increase from 2017 to 2018.

Among continents, exporters in Oceania (mostly New Zealand) sold the highest dollar worth of exported kiwifruits during 2018 with shipments valued at $1.52 billion or almost half (49.8%) of the worldwide total. In second place were European shippers at 38.3%. Smaller percentages came originated from kiwifruit exporters in Latin America (6.7%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Asia (4.2%), North America (0.9%) then Africa (0.1%).

By value, the listed 15 countries shipped 98.7% of global kiwifruit exports.

Among these top exporters, the fastest-growing kiwifruit exporters since 2014 were: Hong Kong (up 197.5%), China (up 111.1%), Iran (up 103.6%), New Zealand (up 82.5%) and the Netherlands (up 43.4%).

Five countries experienced declines in their exported kiwifruit sales, namely: Lithuania (down -65.3%), France (down -40.9%), Italy (down -12%), Germany (down -11.7%) then the United States (down -3.5%).

  2. Italy: $425.5 million (down -18.7%)
  3. Chile: $204.7 million (up 15.4%)
  4. Greece: $140.8 million (up 35.6%)
  5. Iran: $86.1 million (up 103.6%)
  6. Belgium: $20.7 million (down -63.5%)
  7. Portugal: $6 million (reversing a -$1.1 million deficit)
  8. Bangladesh: $2.2 million (no 2014 data)
  9. Turkey: $2 million (reversing a -$2.6 million deficit)
  10. Yemen: $1 million (reversing a -$40,000 deficit)
  11. Guinea: $346,000 (no 2014 data)

New Zealand has the highest surplus in the international trade of kiwifruit. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms New Zealand’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.

The People’s Republic of China incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of kiwifruit. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights China’s strong competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for kiwifruit-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
