International sales from kiwifruit exports by country totaled US$2.7 billion in 2017.

Overall, the value of kiwifruit exports rose by an average 31.8% for all exporting countries since 2013 when kiwifruit shipments were valued at $2.1 billion. Year over year, the value of global kiwifruit exports appreciated by 8.1% from 2016 to 2017.

Among continents, European exporters generated the highest dollar worth of exported kiwifruit during 2017 with shipments valued at $1.19 billion or 43.9% of global kiwifruit exports. Close behind in second place were Oceanian countries (mainly New Zealand) at 43.7%.

Smaller percentages came from kiwifruit exporters in Latin America excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean (7%), Asia (4.1%), North America (1.2%) then Africa (0.1%).

The 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 081050 for fresh kiwifruit.

  6. Iran: $65 million (2.4%)
  7. Netherlands: $55.5 million (2.1%)
  8. France: $43.6 million (1.6%)
  9. United States: $31.4 million (1.2%)
  10. Hong Kong: $30.9 million (1.1%)
  11. Spain: $29.9 million (1.1%)
  12. Germany: $24.3 million (0.9%)
  13. Portugal: $22 million (0.8%)
  14. Lithuania: $8.8 million (0.3%)

The listed 15 countries shipped 98.8% of global kiwifruit exports in 2017 by value.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing kiwifruit exporters since 2013 were: Hong Kong (up 445.3%), China (up 133.3%), New Zealand (up 79.1%) and Portugal (up 62%).

Four countries that experienced declines in their exported kiwifruit sales namely Lithuania (down -61%), France (down -23.5%), Chile (down -21.6%) and the Netherlands (down -8.7%).

  6. Iran: $65 million (up 48.6%)
  7. Portugal: $6.3 million (reversing a -$1.5 million deficit)
  8. Guinea: $521,000 (no 2013 data)
  9. Yemen: $232,000 (reversing a -$119,000 deficit)
  10. Sudan: $224,000 (no 2013 data)
  11. Tanzania: $126,000 (reversing a -$2,000 deficit)

New Zealand has the highest surplus in the international trade of kiwifruit. In turn, this positive cashflow confirms New Zealand’s strong competitive advantage for this specific product category.

The People’s Republic of China incurred the highest deficit in the international trade of kiwifruit. In turn, this negative cashflow highlights China’s strong competitive disadvantage for this specific product category but also signals opportunities for kiwifruit-supplying countries that help satisfy the powerful demand.
