
Overall sales of exported figs increased by an average 28.2% from 5 years earlier in 2020 when globally exported figs sales totaled $671.2 million.
Year over year, the dollar value of exported figs rose 9.7% compared to $784.7 million starting from 2023.
Figs are edible fruits from small flowering trees with white bark. While figs are eaten fresh or dried, they are also processed into jams, biscuits, rolls and other types of desserts.
The 5 biggest exporters of figs (Türkiye, Afghanistan, Austria, Spain and Iran) generated over three-quarters (78.1%) of all international figs sold during 2024.
Applying a continental lens, countries in Asia sold the highest dollar worth of exported figs during 2024 with shipments valued at $650.1 million or 75.5% of the global total. In second place were exporters located in Europe (19.4%). Smaller international sales of figs originated from sellers in Latin America (2.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, North America (2.2%), Africa (0.5%) and Oceania’s (0.02%) Australia and New Zealand.
Shifting our focus to fig imports, the 5 leading importers of figs in 2024 are India, United States of America, Germany, France and Austria. Combined, that quintet of top import countries bought roughly half (49.8%) of globally imported figs.
Those percentages suggest a more concentrated cohort of 91 total figs exporters (78.1% for corresponding top 5 exporters) compared to about 175 buying countries, islands and territories with the top 5 importers consuming under half (49.8%).
Of the global imports total, 49.6% of figs was delivered to European countries ahead of importers in Asia (34.5%), North America (13.2%), Oceania (1.4%) mostly Australia plus New Zealand, Africa (1%) then Latin America (0.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
Worldwide, we calculated the average unit price paid by figs importers to be $4,314 per ton in 2024. That dollar amount reflects 16.6% in inflation compared to the average tonnage rate of $3,699 for 2023.
