Exports of hazelnuts increased in sales by an overall average 25.6% from 5 years earlier in 2020 when export sales for hazelnuts were $2.03 billion.
From 2023 to 2024, worldwide export revenues for the toasty and earthy tasting seed accelerated by 28.9% starting from $1.97 billion.
Alternately called cobnuts or filberts, hazelnuts seeds come from the fruits of hazel trees.
Hazelnuts are used to make candy pralines, chocolate truffles and hazelnut paste products including tortes, cakes and other sweet desserts. Hazelnuts are also key ingredients of flavoring ingredients, pastes and powders.
By value, the 5 biggest exporters of hazelnuts (Türkiye, Chile, United States of America, Italy and Azerbaijan) sold 87.4% of all hazelnuts exported during 2024.
Applying a continental perspective, countries in Asia supplied the highest dollar worth of exported hazelnuts during 2024 with shipments valued at $1.75 billion or 68.8% of the global total. In second place were exporters located in Europe (15%) trailed by those in suppliers in Latin America (9.3%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, North America (6.9%), Oceania (0.003%) led by Tokelau and Australia (0.01%), then Africa (0.005%).
Shifting our focus to imports, the 5 leading importers of hazelnuts in 2024 were buyers in Germany, Italy, France, Canada and the Russian Federation. Combined, that quintet of top import countries bought over two-thirds (69.5%) of globally imported hazelnuts as measured by dollar value.
The above percentages suggest the 66 exporters of hazelnuts (87.4% for the corresponding top 5 exporters) is a more concentrated cohort compared to 165 buying countries, islands and territories. As specified in the previous paragraph, the top 5 importers accounted for a smaller portion of its world total for imported hazelnuts at 69.5%.
As for global imports of hazelnuts by continent, 75.9% of hazelnuts purchased on international markets was delivered to customers in Europe ahead of importers in North America (8.4%), Asia (7.8%), Africa (3.6%), Latin America (3.1%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, and Oceania (1.1%) led by Australia and New Zealand.
We calculated the average unit price collected by exporters of hazelnuts still in their shells to be $3,516 per ton in 2024. That dollar amount reflects a 16.2% inflation rate compared to the average tonnage rate of $3,026 for 2023.
Exports of shelled hazelnuts demanded a higher unit price. For shelled hazelnuts, the average unit price received by exporters was $8,302 per ton in 2024 inflating by 22.4% from the average tonnage rate of $6,780 for 2023. The higher average price results in part from shelling labor costs and other processing expenses, intensified by the fact that price rose at a greater percentage in the latest reporting period.
For research purposes, the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 080221 for fresh or dried hazelnuts in shell, and 080222 for fresh or dried shelled hazelnuts.
Drilling down on those categories, 94.1% of hazelnuts exported worldwide by value were for shelled hazelnuts up from 93.9% for 2023. The remaining 5.9% in 2024 was paid for hazelnuts still in their shells compared to 6.1% in the prior year.
